This report compiles key insights and discussions from the Child Guarantee coordinators’ meeting held in December, which focused on advancing the provision of at least one healthy meal per school day for children in need – one key aspect of the European Child Guarantee.
In addition, it provides an overview of the body of literature, underscoring the wide array of benefits that arise from quality school meal programmes.
- These programs are not just about satiating hunger; they play a crucial role in improving child health, cognitive development, and educational outcomes, while also helping to bridge social inequalities.
- Economic benefits are significant, including potential reductions in healthcare costs associated with malnutrition and non-communicable diseases. The estimated return from investment in school meal programmes is at least sevenfold and can reach up to €34 for each €1 spent.
- In terms of environmental and agricultural benefits, school meal programmes can offer opportunities to support environmental sustainability and local agriculture.
