The Commission has published the 2024 edition of the annual report on intra-EU labour mobility.
The report identifies trends in the free movement of workers and their family members, based on the latest available data (2022/2023). It includes figures on the social situation of movers and third country nationals and looks particularly at the mobility of healthcare workers.
Main findings :
The number of working age EU citizens living in another member state remains stable, at around 10 million persons aged 20-64 years. The number of persons moving from EU/EFTA countries to another country increased to 976 000 and the number of persons returning to the country of citizenship increased to 738 000. These results confirm that mobility within Europe keeps having a strong element of circularity.
The report highlights as well that the employment rate of movers is higher (78%) than that of nationals (76%) and of third country nationals (63%). The special analysis of the social situation of movers demonstrates that access to good and affordable housing is essential for them: 19% of movers are overburdened by housing costs as compared to 8% of the corresponding national population.
The report shows that 2.9% (209 000) of all health-care professionals in the EU and EFTA countries are movers. While the overall figures indicate that healthcare professionals are not overrepresented among movers, the report also shows that below these overall figures, there are considerable regional and professional differences.
