Rocky – an Akita dog – was saved by a mountain rescue team after becoming “exhausted” during a walk at England’s highest peak.
Rocky was “too tired” with “cut paws” to continue the trek up Scafell Pike (978 metres).
Keswick Mountain Rescue team was called to help the 33 kilogrammes dog.
The 13-strong party soon had Rocky back safely.
A member of the rescue team told The Telegraph:
“It was quite a distance from the nearest road and the dog weighed 33 kg, quite a load to carry down the hill.”
“I’m sure the owners were glad to see the mountain rescue team arrive.”
In a statement posted on the rescue team’s Facebook page, the team said that the owners had requested support whilst on a return walk to Langdale, having ascended Scafell Pike.
The message said: “Having already had a very busy day with multiple callouts the Langdale Ambleside team passed it to Keswick as it was on the edge of our patch.
“Keswick team members approached from Seathwaite Farm and climbed towards Esk Hause via Grains Gill.
“Meantime the casualty owners, who were starting to feel the cold, were encouraged to try to descend towards the Keswick Team.
“The Keswick team met the casualty and owners high up Grains Gill.
“Despite being quite a large dog at 33 kg it was a joy to carry such a lightweight casualty.
The casualty remained cool, calm, and positively regal throughout.”
“If your dog isn’t used to the fells then it’s perhaps worth trying a few lower, introductory walks before trying Scafell Pike.”
