Two bodies have been found in the search for canoeists who found themselves in trouble in a river.
The canoeists were spotted in difficulty before capsizing at the weir embankment on the River Great Ouse in Kempston, Bedfordshire.
Bedfordshire police confirmed they were alerted mid-morning about two capsized canoes and a woman in trouble.
Fire and rescue teams and the ambulance service later recovered two bodies.
Officers are working to name the people.
The local coroner has been informed.
A Bedfordshire Police spokesman said:
”Members of the public may have seen an emergency services presence at the Weir embankment in Water Lane, Kempston this morning, following reports received at around 10:50am of two capsized canoes and a possible female in difficulties.
“Officers, working with Beds Fire and Rescue teams and the ambulance service, searched the river and sadly, two deceased persons have been discovered.
“The two bodies have been recovered and the Bedfordshire Coroner made aware.
“At this time, no formal identification has been made and officers continue to work towards establishing this.’
He added a police presence would remain, and the public have been asked to avoid the weir embankment area while officers continue their investigations.
The River Great Ouse is the fifth longest river in the UK.
