Strictly Come Dancing’s Len Goodman has died. He was aged 78.
Goodman was head judge on the BBC show since its first series in 2004.
His final appearance was on the Christmas Day special in 2016.
Goodman died of bone cancer on Saturday. He was with his family.
Among the worldwide tributes was a message from the Queen.
Buckingham Palace said in a statement:
“Her Majesty was saddened to hear the news.”
In 2019 the Queen – then [Camilla] the Duchess of Cornwall – danced with Goodman to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the British Dance Council at the Victory Services Club.
The Queen was a self-confessed “huge fan” of the show.
She made a cameo appearance in the 2017 Christmas programme when parts were filmed at Buckingham Palace.
Goodman’s agent, Jackie Gill, said:
“He always kept his sense of humour and was a ‘true gent’.
“It is with great sadness to announce that Len Goodman has passed away peacefully, aged 78.
“A much-loved husband, father and grandfather who will be sorely missed by family, friends and all who knew him.”
Goodman began dancing at 19. He was a British champion.
Claudia Winkleman, the Strictly presenter, tweeted:
“I’m so sad about Len.
“He was one of a kind, a brilliant and kind man.
“Full of twinkle, warmth, and wit.
“Sending all love to his family and friends.”
And fellow presenter, Tess Daly, added:
“A beautiful man, genuine, warm and humble, who left an impression on everyone he met.
“You were never a ‘seven’ for me, Len you were always a 10.”
Craig Revel Horwood, the Strictly judge, tweeted:
