Just Stop Oil activists urge “civil resistance” after storming World Snooker Championship at The Crucible

Just Stop Oli protesters will target other sporting events over the summer as the activists urge “civil resistance”.

The group struck yesterday at the World Snooker Championship at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.

A man stormed the playing arena, jumped on a snooker table, and unleashed a bag of bright orange powder.

A woman protester tried to glue herself to a table but was hauled off.

When questioned about the tactics a Just Stop Oil person said:

“There will be ongoing disruption until the Government meets our demand to end new oil and gas.”

In the next few days, the London Marathon is due to be run and FA Cup semi-finals are being played.

Police forces have been liaising to avoid further disruption.

It’s reported Extinction Rebellion has threatened “The Big One” – a four-day period of action starting this Friday.

Just Stop Oil added:

“We will continue to disrupt sports and cultural events until the institutions join us in civil resistance against our genocidal government’s plans to licence new oil and gas.

“We expect that there will be lots of Just Stop Oil supporters at the London Marathon.

“If the polls are right then about 60 per cent of the London Marathon runners support our demand to stop new oil and gas.”

Hugh Brasher, event director for the London Marathon, has warned spectators to avoid the Parliament Square area.

He said: “We’re aware of the Extinction Rebellion protest that is scheduled to take place in Parliament Square from Friday 21 April through to Monday 24 April and have been in contact with them for some months.

“The Extinction Rebellion organisers have assured us that they do not wish to disrupt the TCS London Marathon.

“As Parliament Square and the immediate surrounding area will be very busy, we advise spectators to watch the London Marathon from other locations and avoid the Parliament Square area on the day. As always, we are working closely with the Metropolitan Police and other stakeholders on the safety and security of the event.”

Last week Animal Rising disrupted the Grand National.

A Just Stop Oil spokeswoman said:

“We will not answer questions about how we plan our actions.

“That is irrelevant when we face crop failure, drought, and starvation within a few short decades.

“To allow new oil and gas is the greatest criminal act in human history.

“It’s time for everyone to join us in civil resistance or face the loss of everything we know and love.

“Which side are you on?”
