Government backs efforts to strip serial rapist Met officer David Carrick of £22,000 a year pension

The Government backs efforts to strip serial rapist David Carrick of his police pension.

Serving officer Carrick admitted more than 80 sexual offences – including 18 rapes.

He has now been sacked from the force.

The crimes took place between 2003 and 2020.

The Metropolitan Police expects more victims to come forward.

London’s Mayor Sadiq Khan is pressing for Carrick, 48, to lose his £22,000 a year pension.

Home Office minister Robert Jenrick backed him.

Mr Jenrick said:

“The forfeiture of the pension is a matter for the Mayor of London, but we support his efforts to remove that pension, if indeed that is what he chooses to do.

“This is one of the most egregious cases of police misconduct in the history of the Met, perhaps in the history of British policing.

“This disgusting individual should not benefit from his years serving in the Metropolitan Police.”

However, Scotland Yard has said under current rules it is “unlikely” Carrick could lose his pension.

Mayor Khan is pursuing a forfeiture, backed by Home Secretary Suella Braverman.

Home Office guidelines state that “forfeiture” applications to remove a police pension can be made if an officer has been convicted of a criminal offence connected to their service.

Carrick’s crimes were committed while off duty.

Police have said they expect more of victims to come forward.

Detective Chief Inspector Iain Moor, from Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit, said:

“The details of David Carrick’s crimes are truly shocking.

“I suspect many will be appalled and sickened by his actions.

“But I hope the victims and the public more widely are reassured that no one is above the law and the police service will relentlessly pursue those offenders who target women in this way.

“The police service is committed to tackling violence against women and girls in all its forms and I hope our response in this case serves to reassure victims of our commitment to them.”
