Disgraced entertainer Rolf Harris has died. He was aged 93.
Harris was a performer that beguiled a generation – a much-loved “national treasure”.
He was popular as an artist – he painted the late Queen Elizabeth II – a musician with a number one hit, and an all-round entertainer.
However, in 2014 he was convicted of sex crimes against children – some as young as seven-years-old – and jailed for five years and nine months.
Sentencing Harris, Mr Justice Sweeney told him:
“Your reputation lies in ruins.
“You have been stripped of your honours and you have no-one to blame but yourself.”
Among the many honours bestowed were CBE, OBE and MBE, as well as Membership of the Order of Australia.
All were withdrawn.
Harris was released from prison on licence in 2017.
The showman disappeared from public life and spent his last years at his home in Bray, Berkshire.
He said in 2017: “I’m 87 years old, my wife is in ill health and we simply want to spend our remaining time together in peace.”
