British tennis sensation Emma Raducanu will miss Wimbledon after having surgery on her right hand – with further operations to follow.
The operations continue an astonishing run of bad luck for the player who against all odds won the US Open in 2021.
Since then, various injuries have ensured Raducanu has barely put together a decent run of matches – forcing her ranking to drop out of the world’s top 100.
Following the operation Raducanu posted a photograph from her hospital bed on Instagram.
It shows a large bandage around her right forearm.
Raducanu posted a letter to Instagram about her disappointment.
The player wrote:
“It is safe to say the last 10 months have been difficult as I dealt with a recurring injury on a bone of both hands.
“I tried my best to manage the pain and play through it for most of this year and end of last year by reducing practice load dramatically, missing weeks of training as well as cutting last season short to try [to] heal it.
“Unfortunately, it’s not enough.”
The next operation will be on an ankle followed by the left hand.
It’s hoped she’ll be back in training by early autumn.
She wrote on Instagram:
“It pains me that I will miss the summer events.
“I tried to downplay the issues so I thank all my fans who continued to support me when you did not know the facts.
“Looking forward to seeing you all back out there.”
