British actor Julian Sands is reported missing in Southern California’s San Gabriel mountains after going hiking.
The 65-year-old actor disappeared five days ago during bad weather and “frail conditions” in the Baldy Bowl region.
The actor – who has starred in Oscar nominated films – was reported missing by his wife.
Gloria Huerta, a spokesperson for the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department, said:
“From what I understand, he left sometime that day for a hike and when he did not return, his family reported him missing.”
Ground rescue teams have since left the mountain because of avalanche fears.
The search is continuing from the air with helicopters and drones.
In a statement the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s department said Mr Sands was reported missing at about 19:30 local time on Friday 13th January.
It added: “The department’s search and rescue crews responded and began a search.
“But they have been hampered by severe weather warnings and trail conditions.
“However, we continue to search by helicopter and drones when the weather permits.”
Ground searches would continue when the weather improved.
The force revealed it had responded to 14 distress calls from hikers in the region.
It warned hikers to “think twice and heed warnings” amid adverse weather conditions.
Mr Sands had a lead role in the 1985 Oscar winning film A Room With A View.
On the back of its success, he moved to California.
He also starred as the son of Satan in the 1989 supernatural thriller Warlock and its sequel Warlock: The Armageddon.
Other film credits include supporting roles in The Killing Fields, Arachnophobia and Leaving Las Vegas.
